My back to school wish list

A glimpse into my world down here...

So that's it, August has gone and we are now into the realms of September which means a lot of different things for different people. The nights are going to get noticeably longer, it will get cooler (but with the Summer we've had who is really going to notice the difference?) and it is time to go back to school.

With back to school comes the obvious hauls for stationary and super cute outfit ideas, which don't get me wrong a few months ago I would have been fully prepared to show you, but I'm shopping a little differently at the moment.

I am trying to make more of an effort with the way I shop, concentrating on;

  • Buying good quality pieces that will last
  • Trying not to spend too much on these pieces, so buying second hand or vintage
  • If I have to buy new making sure that it is an ethical piece
  • Generally buying less as I really just don't need it

With all this is mind I really only have four pieces on my wish list that I need to buy, and one that really is just a luxury piece. So let's start with the essentials;

A black blazer

Now the school that I work in has a business dress code for it's staff, which isn't very strict but there will always be times like parents evenings when I need to look super smart. This is where the blazer comes in, throw it over the dress I'm wearing and not only does it provide an extra layer if I'm sat by the door again, but it makes me look like I might know what I'm talking about.

Obviously there are a million blazers out there so finding the right one requires a lot of thought and leg work. I only have a couple of requirements; plain black so no pin stripe so I can pair it with the trousers I already own and it has to be single breasted as I have a very small frame and I don't like the way too many buttons looks on me.

I thought about spending a largish amount of money on a good quality blazer from the likes of Reiss but then I put a bit more thought into it. As I have already said it isn't the strictest of dress codes and I have gotten away with not wearing one since January, so why should I spend so much money on a piece I'm not going to wear that much? This is why I have decided that I am going to search eBay for a second hand one, and if I can find a better quality one for the fraction of the price it will be even better.

All that being said, I have kinda fallen in love with this blazer from Free People, which as you can see is made of velvet and it isn't cheap either. This is going to be my unicorn piece, I will sit and admire it from afar because I'm not actually sure how much use I will get from it. But it is beautiful!

A white shirt

I don't know what it is about a white shirt, doesn't matter what style it is, it just looks smart. Personally I hate buying shirts as they just don't fit me as I have a tiny body, big breasts and short arms. There is also the issue that if I go for a crisp white shirt I might look too much like the students that I teach.

Since January I have bought two white shirts, neither of which have lasted too long. One was an ASOS own branded shirt which was so cheap and poorly made, the seams didn't line up on the cuff and the buttons didn't just come off, they broke! The second one was from Zara, and although it was better quality it had an unfortunate encounter with a whiteboard pen.

So you can see why I am a little unsure about this purchase, I am also finding it a little difficult to find one that I feel displays my personality (I am in the process of writing a post on this subject so hold tight), that was until I found this one, again from Free People. Yes it is a little pricey, so I'm not going to rush into its purchase, maybe after the next payday.

Work shoes

This is the most urgent of items that I need to purchase as I don't actually have any school shoes. Sounds so funny when I say it like that, brings back memories of when my Mum used to have to take us all shopping for shoes, which when you have four kids is not easy.

It is urgent because I threw the last pair away, the heels needed replacing for the millionth time, I had scuffed the ends up so badly and the insides had all come unstuck.

Suzee Q Heels - Beyond Skin

Suzee Q Heels - Beyond Skin

Ideally I would love to buy these beautiful court shoes from Beyond Skin, they make the most amazing vegan shoes and as I already have a pair of heels from them I can say they are some of the most comfortable heels that I have ever worn. However I have just mentioned the state that my shoes got into last year, that I think if I did that to a pair of Beyond Skin shoes I would cry.

That is why I will more than likely be choosing a pair like these from New Look, they give the professional feel to an outfit, they are more affordable that I wont be devastated if I wreck them. I appreciate that this isn't the most sustainable approach but I am still learning and this is a compromise.

 A huge school bag

This is another item that as a kid you would have to buy every year, that as a teacher I still need to buy.

For the past few years I have been using a tote bag from Lush, which don't get me wrong I love to bits, but I just have this feeling that I would like an actual bag to put all my junk in at the end of the day.

So this purchase is definitely not the most urgent so I suppose this can wait a payday or two, but when I do I will probably be purchasing this beautiful piece by Matt & Nat.

For those of you who don't know Matt & Nat is a completely vegan company from Canada that make amazing bags. Recently they have branched out into SVG's (small vegan goods) and shoes, if you check out my July favourites you will hear me rave about the pair I have.

And finally a pencil case

As I said, September brings stationary hauls, which based on the number of pens I have hanging around I don't need to do. Nor do I need a new pencil case as the one I have been using for the past 18 months is still in great condition, but I am going back to a job that I really don't like doing so for me this would be a little treat just to make the day a little bit nicer.

Again I would choose from Matt & Nat, but technically to fit in all the stuff that I use (I have a whole rainbow of highlighters) I will have to purchase one of their make up bags rather than a pencil case.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, my back to school wish list. For many of you I imagine it will just be work as usual, but if you are or have purchased anything for the new term I would love to hear it.
